John Duncan

Senior Manager, Marine Programme WWF

John Duncan is the senior manager of WWF– South Africa’s Marine Programme where he leads a passionate team of people committed to finding solutions to some of the most difficult challenges facing our oceans today. After joining WWF-SA in 2008, John led the Southern African Sustainable Seafood Initiatve’s (SASSI) business engagement with the South African retail and, later fisheries sector, to create one of the first intergrated sustainable seafood programmes in the world which works across the seafood supply from boat-to-plate. In his role as Senior Manger, he now overseas the WWF-SA Marine Programme’s conservation and research activities across a broad range of marine-related fields ranging from sustainable seafood and fisheries improvement programmes to marine spatial planning and integrated approaches to ocean management. He sits on the steering committee of the Responsible Fisheries Alliance (RFA) and is a member of the Marine Stewardship Council’s (MSC) Developing World Working Group. He completed a post-grad diploma in environmental law through the University of Cape Town (UCT) in 2012 and is currently studying towards his MBA as a Bertha Scholar at the UCT Graduate School of Business where he is exploring ideas on how to create plastic-free oceans.
