Zhang Wei began her role as the Assistant Resident Representative and Chief Communications Officer for the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in China in 2014. She leads the organization’s efforts in communications and advocacy, striving for innovation, as well as nurturing and strengthening key partnerships with the private sector as it works to realize the vision of the 2030 Agenda and the SDG’s.
With more than 14 years’ experience in the organization, she leads UNDP China in adopting innovative approaches to development with focus on outreach and advocacy, public sector innovation, engaging the private sector for social good, and harnessing technology for development; in particular, the establishment of the first UN-led national level innovation lab in China.
Since 2016, Zhang Wei has served as the Chair of the United Nations Communications Group (UNCG) in China, a team consisting of communications leads from 24 UN agencies based in Beijing and acting as a common platform for inter-agency cooperation on communications and public information. As the Chair, she provides communications leadership for the UN Country Team and identifies new and creative ways to communicate the UN’s mandate and work and promoting a coherent image of the UN in China.
Prior to joining UNDP in 2004, she worked in the media. A Beijing native, she received master’s degrees in journalism and Latin-American studies from Stanford University.
