A Movie is a strong medium of spreading a message to millions of people around the world. Each movie envelopes a different message, equally important than the first. Here we have a list of movies that talks about solidarity, humanity and coming together in unity as one. The United Nations recognizes the concept of solidarity in the fight against poverty and promoting human and social development.

1. Invictus

Invictus, relates the inspiring true story of how Nelson Mandela, the first black president in South Africa. However, his Presidency is accompanied by many challenges in the post-Apartheid era. Hoping to solve the many problems that is present in the country, Nelson Mandela ventures into a unique partnership with the South Africa Rugby team, hoping that the universal language of sport will bring his people together and out of the hatred and violence.

2. Freedom Writers

The movie is based in Long Beach, California in 1994, centered around Woodrow Wilson High School , which has recently implemented a voluntary integration program. This is where Erin Gruwell starts her first teaching job. She is not prepared at the state of her classroom which is occupied by students who live in fear and constantly facing gang violence. The students have grown up with strict beliefs to protect their own and racial discrimination is prominent all throughout the school and community. Erin turns towards the power of education and writing to help the students to learn tolerance and apply themselves to be respectful towards others. She convinces them to write in journals and Erin complies all these journals to a book she called The Freedom Writers Diary.

3. Suffragette

Based around women’s suffrage in the United Kingdom, Suffragette tells the story of Maud Watts, a 24-year-old laundress who is caught up in the Suffragette protests and encounters many women who are protesting for the right to vote for women. These women have faced oppression for far too long and recognizes that peaceful protests will not work in the brutal state. This prompts the women into radicalism and are often beaten up by the police officers and most times are locked in jail. However, this doesn’t stop the women from their fight and they meet in secret to support each other and continue their mission, guided by the words of Emmeline Pankhurst. After many sacrifices, this fight for gender equality eventually bore fruit and resulted in the women’s rights being recognized in Britain.

4. Unity

Unity is a powerful documentary that aims to tell the story of how we are currently living in a world of war and violence. It talks about how we are constantly at war with one another, our nations and our environment. It presents how we, although we exist in the same world, we are still unable to get along and live in peace with one another. The movie resonates a strong message of appeal to human kind to see beyond barriers and live in love, peace and compassion to all creatures on this planet.

5. Istanbul United

The movie presents the unifying effect that sports have on people, in this case, football. The story is about three football clubs in Istanbul, (Galatasaray, Fenerbahce and Besiktas) who have been known all over Europe for their undying support of their teams, and their mutual rivalry against each other, that has often resulted in violent crashes. At present, there is a current protest movement happening in Turkey in which the police resolved to become ruthless in the way they dealt with the peaceful protestors. This caused great angst throughout the nation and this is what caused something remarkable to happen. The three teams came together in unity to help the civilians and the protestors against police violence and tear gas attacks. They named this unlikely alliance, the Istanbul United.
