‘Indigenous Rice Seeds’ central to sustainable farming in India

Indigenous seeds and wild varieties particularly those from forest areas always play a vital role in sustaining the system. India had a diverse variety of indigenous rice seeds. However, when the government aggressively promoted high-yielding hybrid rice seeds, the usage of traditional counterparts declined. Changing climate and erratic weather events have now made agriculturists reconsider switching back to traditional varieties as many have realised that indigenous seeds perform better.
