Artificial Intelligence, or AI, is taking center stage as it continues to impact people’s lives on a daily basis. AI’s potential is being exploited and developed at an unprecedented speed but with it comes opportunities and challenges. AI will greatly change our economy and society.

ITU wishes to work with Academia, researchers, industries, Administrations and Governments, UN Agencies, as well as other stakeholders and partners, to facilitate the AI development, to bring the benefits of AI to all.

Enabling the positive use of Artificial Intelligence for All is the theme of WTISD 2018 and will focus on the potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to accelerate the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Below you will find four A.I enabled machines that are helping mankind:

1. Sophia

Sophia is a robot designed by Hanson Robotics and was appointed UNDP’s Innovation Champion for Asia-Pacific.

Sophia, now three years old, uses voice- and face-recognition technology combined with artificial intelligence to carry on conversations with humans. Experts believe that artificial intelligence such as Sophia will bring about a dramatic shift in how technology can help solve some of development’s most intractable problems.

2. Truly creative robots

Will AI-composed music ever be indistinguishable from the work of human musicians?

One of the most intriguing areas in artificial intelligence research concerns the open question of whether a machine could ever be truly creative. With a new wave of emerging potential for AI in creative industries, scientists have designed machines that can create musical pieces used as soundtracks for film directors, advertising agencies, and even game studios.

3. Pepper

Pepper is a humanoid robot designed with the ability to read emotions. It recently became the first humanoid robot to be adopted in Japanese homes. The intention behind creating Pepper is “to make people happy”, enhance people’s lives, facilitate relationships, have fun with people and connect people with the outside world. The robot gradually memorises your personality traits, your preferences, and adapts himself to your tastes and habits.

4. Robonaut 2

Launched in 2011 in an effort to create a robotics research platform on the space station, Robonaut 2 showed that a humanoid robot could potentially assist a human space crew, freeing astronauts from having to perform basic maintenance activities. It was a learning experience that will be invaluable as scientists step towards an internal robotics solution to maintenance and logistics for future exploration spacecraft.
