Dr. René N’Guettia Kouassi hold: i) a PhD in Economics obtained in October 1995 and ii) a PhD in Development Economics. He also obtained a Post Graduate Diploma (DEA) in Economics from the University of Auvergne (France) in 1982. As supplementary training, he hold an Advanced Diploma in Town and Country Planning.
He is currently the Director of Economic Affairs of the African Union Commission, a position he has held since July 2004. Previously, he held successively the posts of Deputy Director of Cabinet of the Secretary General of the OAU, Dr. Salim Ahmed Salim; and Director of Cabinet of the Interim Chairperson of the AU Commission, Mr. Amara Essy.
Furthermore, he was the Coordinator of the African Institute for Economic Development and Planning (IDEP) on industrial development in Africa from 1996 to 1997. In addition, he is technical coordinator for the implementation of the African Charter on Statistics, the Harmonisation Strategy of Statistics (SHaSA), the Minimum Integration Programme (MIP), the Pan-African Institute of Statistics, the Pan-African Training Centre on Statistics, and the Microfinance Plan of Action. Furthermore, he also coordinate the establishment of the Pan-African financial institutions, namely the African Monetary Fund (AMF), the African Investment Bank (AIB), and the African Central Bank (ACB). Consequently, he coordinate the convening of the annual meeting of the Specialized Technical Committee (STC) on Economic, Monetary and Integration Matters, the Pan-African Private Sector Forum and the Congress of African Economists (held every two years). He is also Editor-in-Chief of the quarterly Bulletin of the Fridays of the Commission which addresses topical development issues of the continent; as well as the African Integration and Development Review, which is published half-yearly.
Finally he is author of several books. He has also published numerous articles in various scientific journals.
