It is time to rethink how we grow, share and consume our food. The UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) look to mobilize efforts to end all forms of poverty, fight inequalities and tackle climate change, while ensuring that no one is left behind. SDG 2 aims to end hunger, achieve food security and promote sustainable agriculture. A profound change of the global food and agriculture system is needed if we are to nourish today’s 795 million hungry and the additional 2 billion people expected by 2050. Global food manufacturer Mars has taken a direct approach to ensuring quantity and quality in cocoa production in Indonesia through a programme to develop “cocoa doctors” who teach farmers modern production techniques.
